About.com Article: Sample Sale Shopping Tips

About.com  New York City Travel

Sample Sale Shopping Tips
http://gonyc.about.com/od/samplesales/tp/sample_sale_tip.htm?r=et

If you've never been to a New York City sample sale, you might be intimidated -- but there's no need to be scared! New York City's Sample Sales are a great way to get designer clothing at deeply discounted prices and with these tips and advice, you'll be an expert shopper in no time.

1. Know Where You're Going

Bring addresses for sample sales -- they are frequently held in office buildings and warehouses and there aren't always signs outside to indicate the sale is going on. Knowing that the sale is on 33rd between 5th and 6th Avenue is not enough -- you need to know the exact address and floor/suite where the sale is being held. Most Sample Sale Listings will include the necessary details. If you have a phone number, don't hesitate to call to see if you might need an appointment.

2. Plot Out a Path

Some time spent with a map designing a route for the best path to work your way through a series of sample sales will save you tons of time and make the most of your shopping stamina. But don't be so stuck to your plan that you don't take advantage of sales you may discover on flyers and billboards as you walk around.

3. Dress for Success

Successful Sample Sale shopping requires lots of energy and time on your feet. You'll be happiest if you wear comfortable shoes. Lots of the sales don't have changing rooms, so wear undergarments (or a leotard) that you won't mind other people seeing under clothing that is easy to change.

4. Few Sales Are Truly Private

Even though some samples sales require that you make an appointment or have your name added to the guest list, very sales are limited to a specific audience. If you know about the sale, as long as you make the call to get added to the list or make the necessary reservation, you should have no trouble getting in.

5. Shop Early for the Best Selection & Shop Late for the Best Prices

Early in the morning on the first day of a sale, you are most likely to have the best items to choose from -- and probably the best organization in the store. As the day goes on, items will be picked over and often the best bargains will be gone. Discounts increase as the last day of the sale approaches -- these sample sales are the way that manufacturers get rid of excess inventory and most don't want merchandise left over when the sale is over.

6. Closely Check Items Before Purchasing

All sales are final, so if you discover a hole after you've already paid, the item (and hole) are yours. You may be happy to replace buttons, fix hems and repair zippers, but it's best if you know what needs to be done before you buy.

7. Be Open-Minded, But Know What You Want

Finding a specific item can be a challenge at a sample sale -- you're more likely to find great deals if you keep an open mind about what you're seeking. Hit several different sales to maximize your chances of success. Being open-minded doesn't mean forgetting your budget -- most listings will give you an idea of prices to expect, so choose sales that meet your goals.

8. Just Because It's at a Sample Sale, Doesn't Mean It's a Deal

Sometimes, there's a good reason that an item didn't sell during the regular season -- whether it's a skirt that's not cut to fit well or an ugly purse, just because it's got a designer label doesn't mean you should buy it.
9. Bring Cash
While some designers and warehouses accept credit cards and checks, some will only take cash.

10. Avoid Lunch Hour Whenever Possible

From about 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. sample sales tend to be at their most crowded with New Yorkers on lunch break trying to find a deal. Try to get to most of your sample sale destinations early to avoid the crowds.r

Quick Tips - When to Toss Out Your Makeup

Quick Tips - When to Toss Out Your Makeup

Source:

Please remember, these are general guides. if you have any medical conditions, you should stick to them. Personally, i cannot share any eye make-up and need to replace them monthly.

source

  • Face Powder and Blush/Bronzer

Powder face makeup can last over a year, if there is no shiny build up on the surface and you have not had any major skin irritations during use. Honestly though, most people won't be able to make a face powder last for over a year anyway. And as a general rule of thumb, if it smells funny or looks strange you should toss it. Powder blush and powder bronzers fall into a more extended category since most of us change our colors each season. With proper care, and clean brushes, you can squeeze up to 4 years out of your powder brush or bronzer.

  • Eye Products

Next, let's cover our eyes. Most experts suggest throwing away liquid eyeliner and mascara every 3 months. Personally, I keep my liquid eyeliner and mascara for at least 6 months and then open a new one. As for mascara if it isn't dry, clumpy, or smells foul then you should be okay for 6 months. The only exception is if you get an eye infection; eye infections mean that you need to toss all eye makeup and start over again. Powdered products, such as eyeshadow, will normally last for up to 4 years, as long as you wash your brushes regularly and don't reuse them after an eye infection. And as for pencil eyeliner, it can last up to 1-2 years, if properly stored and sharpened regularly. Sharpening your pencils before each use will keep them clean, which will allow you to use them for 2 years or longer.

  • Lips and Nails

Finally let's cover the lips and nails. Nail polish is a pretty sturdy product and can last up to 2 years, unless you wear it with a fungal infection. Anytime your makeup items come into contact with an infection, they should be tossed immediately. As for lipstick, lip gloss, and lip liner; they can last for up to 2 years, if you don't use them up first.

Pamper me event : Satya Jewerly

Nearly two months ago a close friend if mine delivered her baby.

The baby was delivered at Roosevelt hospital near Columbus circle. I ran to the Wholesfood in the mall to pick up some flowers. One way out I saw this small jewelry shop. The window display had too many pieces that I liked, so I knew it wasn't going to be a two minute browsing session.

Today at The Pamper me event I got to see the jewelry from Satya again!!! ( I didn't know the brand name until today).

Their pieces are genuinely exquisite.

It doesn't matter how much I have on my plate, every year I have made it my year to participate in volunteer events, walks and donate to a cause. Satya is my kind of company, as they  place a heavy emphasis on Philantropy.

"Our Mantra: Beautiful, meaningful, inspiring. We design so that anyone can view our collection and piece of jewelry that warms their heart because it is so innately true to them. Satya means truth in Sanskrit, and it is the guiding force behind all 'we do. We make jewelry of all truths and donate to children’s charities throughout the world.

Here are some of the beautiful pieces, available for sale at Satya website/stores.

LASHBLAST VOLUME BLASTING MASCARA: Covergirl

LashBlast Volume Blasting Mascara

LASHBLAST VOLUME BLASTING MASCARA

CoverGirl

I totally understand why this product was selected for the Beauty Awards 2012!!!

This is my favorite makeup item, hands-down !! It is a staple in my pocketbook. Some people turn around and go back home if they leave their cellphone, Lashblast is on that same page with me.

When I got the stores and find the LashBlast double back on sale, its like hitting the lotto. Its a magical moment because I buy more mascaras than most. I have an eye condition, which requires for me to change my mascaras very frequently ( recommended is 3 months). I change my mascara every month.

I have tried many mascaras, many have been pretty good, maybe even great. But none excel Lashblast. Lashblast makes my eyelashes thick, long, voluptuous and defined. If I apply multiple layers, my lashes remain flawless.

Shecky’s Night Out in NYC, Friday October 19th

Shecky’s Night Out in NYC, Friday October 19th

Shecky's Logo

I have been attending Shecky's events since its very beginning. I remember, the first one I attended, my goodie bag was worth well over $300, plus every almost every vendor was giving out freebies/samples at their table. I used to get home with everything!!!! Deodorants, body wash, lotions, hair products, beauty products, teeth whitening, food samples, wine...

The events also included give-away and games.

Those were the old good days.....

For the past couple of years, my bestie, who is my loyal partner in attending this event a couple times a year, have repetitively discussed the downward pattern. I remember one time, a lot of guys were in attendance.... AAAAAwkward.

This time, they really out did themselves. The goodie bag didn't even have the usual Shecky's logo on it. Maybe they were too embarrassed of its content. what was in it??? The goodie bag was a pink plastic clear one. Screaming Cheap... Contents: Press-on nails (  i guess this is must, yuck), greeting card ( which was cute), Neutrogena face wash ( which I will use).  That's that. Pretty impressive.... Right...

I have to admit, at the price value it is still worth attending for a couple of drinks and catching up with my friends. But is very unfair to vendors, as clients are coming with no intent to really purchase anything because these events have been sooo poor over the last two years.

Maybelline SAVED THE DAY:

There is light at the end of the tunnel...

This event, is the first that i actually arrived early. I got there about 5:15 ( starts at 5).

I waited online for about 5 minutes, which is pretty reasonable ( too bad, i got to see the lame goodie bag before even going in).

The first session that caught my eyes was Maybelline. They were perfectly staged in the back session of the layout. The beauty consultants seem very knowledge and were pleasant. Even on early arrival, Maybelline already had a line.

I decided to go get a drink, and take a round the floor. The drink was decent " the little black dress"- nothing i would personally buy. The walk was worthless. I ended up back at Maybelline. Now the line was longer. I didn't get to personally get a mini make-over, but did see some of the pictures.

Maybelline was the major highlight of this event. Otherwise, it would have been pretty much flat.

I did see many satisfied clients leaving the Maybelline stations more than satisfied.
